John has particularly enjoyed playing jazz since he discovered Dave Brubeck whilst a teenager. Amongst the work in his younger years which had a large jazz element in his younger years were a long-running Saturday night session with Cyril Harling at the Mill, Sonning, and a number of gigs at Soho nightclubs such as the Gargoyle, playing with distinguished soloists such as Brian Ashe and Tommy Whittle.
On 19th September of last year he performed at Mill Hill Jazz Club with his own quartet featuring the excellent vocalist Bobby Allen. Earlier gigs at this venue have featured such fine lead players as Steve Chadwick (trumpet) and Bob Sydor (sax/flute). He has also deputised for the pianist in the house band at that club accompanying all guest players and singers.
He also enjoys playing with big bands, and frequently deputised in Jim Barton’s excellent band based in Harrow.
Earlier gigs with singers have included at an event in Mill Hill featuring Bobby Allen and Rachael Henshaw and several concerts at Burgh House featuring Prudence Drage. He has provided accompaniment at open mic jazz sessions led by the late Jack Jaffe, David Doyle and others. He has also enjoyed deputizing with the fine band Pimp My Jazz and working with their excellent singer Lea Lyle. Another very enjoyable gig in recent weeks involved playing keyboard with the Brent Jazz Orchestra as part of the Bedford Park Festival – this featured the excellent singer Beverley Stone.
